Sometime in 2007, I enrolled in a chemistry coaching class for class 11th in my locality. The teacher was a young man with a lot of knowledge of local politics and ‘enough’ of chemistry. One day during the class he pulled out a pile of red slips from his pocket and started to distribute it among us. Then he said, “Give me two rupee each and now you are a part of an all India student organization.” Puzzled with this unexpected boon, one of dare-devil student asked what the meaning was of this announcement! He then explained us thus, “See, if you go to the market and get caught in some argument, just call these guys in this organization and they will rush to your help in 50 seconds.” We were stunned and happy, and paid two rupees to be a part of, if not Goondas , at least the goons.
In recent times, ABVP, Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad, is trying hard to prove itself the same.
It has become a modus operandi of ABVP to interrupt, stop and sometimes plunder the ongoing programs, seminars or conferences conducted by other groups. It is clear that ABVP does not and cannot see a democratic atmosphere in the campuses where every group is free to express its thoughts and stands. ABVP won’t tolerate, it won’t let the others talk.
It is not so late to forget that it was only the interruption by ABVP at a movie screening program at a college of Delhi University which ultimately resulted in the institutional murder of Rohit Vemula at University of Hyderabad. Yet, it does not appear that ABVP has learned any lesson or even thought of learning one. It is going around suppressing any voice of dissent, abusing, interrupting, plundering, all the programs organized by Dalit, leftist, Bahujan or any other organization with different views. Wherever ABVP is in power in the Student Union, it misuses its power and influence to suppress any voice of dissent which goes against ABVP’s communal and sectarian ideology.
That is why I was least surprised when I got to know the recent cowardly act of ABVP at Deshbandhu College of Delhi University, nobody would be. It not only interrupted and forcefully stopped a seminar organized by Deshbandhu Discussion Forum (DDF) and Bhagat Singh Ambedkar Study Circle but also forced some specific students to chant ‘bharat mata ki jay’. Or in other case, they threatened those specific students will be considered as Pakistanis (notice; not just as Pakistan supporters but as downright Pakistanis). The Indian Express, reports thus: they stood on the benches and pointed to some specific students and told them- “if you are not a Pakistani, then shout Bharat Mata Ki Jai.”
It not only interrupted and forcefully stopped a seminar organized by Deshbandhu Discussion Forum (DDF) and Bhagat Singh Ambedkar Study Circle but also forced some specific students to chant ‘bharat mata ki jay’.
What height of insanity and what stupid logic; as if only Pakistanis are those who don’t chant ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’! What about near-dear American or even Bhutanese? Why only this slogan to prove anyone is Indian or Alien or whoever? And who is this ABVP, to certify anyone Indian or non-Indian? Answer is simple; they serve as the hate mongers so as to benefit the communal movement of RSS.
This time, on 2nd August, it was a seminar on ‘Annihilation of caste’ that they disrupted at Deshbandhu College of Delhi University. Well, they couldn’t have spared it at any cost; Ambedkar being arch-enemy of pundits of caste system in India!
It is reported that they also disrupted another seminar on ‘Ambedkar On Caste And Social Justice’ in the college on 8th April, this year.
One of the organizers has said, according to Indian express, that ABVP activists misbehaved with organizers and the professors too, though they were speaking only about the technicalities of caste system. He also said that the seminar was not ‘political’.
On other side, college union secretary, Krishna Kumar Rai from the ABVP, alleged that the seminar had no permission, and so they went to intervene. Perhaps, it is responsibility of union secretary to check on the permissions of all the programs going on in the campus. He also pointed out that, “How can these Communist upper castes hold a discussion on caste? They’re just trying to pit castes against each other, like Dalit against Brahmins, and create disharmony.”
While on one side the phrase ‘upper-caste Communist’ is really worthy of serious attention equally for left and civil society, on other side it must be clear equally to ABVP that these were the Brahmins themselves who always kept down the Dalits and other scheduled caste. Upper caste organizations like ABVP and RSS have no right to blame others for their own crimes.
Between all this hullaballoo, college principal said that he had not received any communication from either side on the matter.
