Students of Kashmir University have alleged that authorities have denied hostel to them without any reasonable ground. Recently Kashmir University has issued a circular for closing the hostel for winter break for two months i.e. in January and February. The order also reads that students having exams in these two months can stay in hostels after getting the authorisation from the concerned departments but they have claimed that despite authorisation they are not allowed to stay in hostels.

Tajumal Islam, vice President J&K Students Movement and a hostel boarder said “when we pay the rent of the hostel we pay for the whole year not for 10 months, so the university has no authority to close the hostel. Also we have paid for the library and internet facilities, we are not able to avail those facility”.

“During regular class work we are not able to visit Allama Iqbal Library which is one of the biggest libraries in north India because of our hectic schedule of classes but in these two months students want to take the benefit of the  Iqbal library but unfortunately we are denied the accommodation in hostel” he added.

Aasif wani a law student said “this is the misuse and arbitrary use of power, there was no need to close hotel. There is no need of constructions in hostel nor any renovation. These steps are only taken to harass students. Due to this sudden forceful closure our belongings are locked in hostel and we are not allowed to even take those”.

Aarif another hostel boarder said “for many days we are going to one office after another with authorisation letter from our departments but no one is ready to listen to us. They are only sending us from office to office”.

Students also said that if University can’t give us space for exam in winters then why don’t they conduct exam in March. They also said we are from the poor and far flung areas, its not possible for us to take rented room in Srinagar city.

Prof G.N Khakee, Provost Kashmir University has acknowledged that the hostels are closed for winter break and the reason he cited is the freezing of water supply pipes.
