Aasman Teri Lahad Pe Shabnam Afshani Kare

May the sky shed its dew upon your grave!

Sixty years ago on this day, 22nd Feb 1958, country had lost one of its bravest men. He was Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. 21st Century born kids don’t even recognize Abul Kalam over Abdul Kalam. Talking about Azad with WhatsApp reading men/women is not an easy affair to deal with. You try to introduce a man who is lost somewhere in the race of jingoism and unfortunate combat of history. To ease your job you tell to your friends that IITs were founded by Maulana Azad when he was the Education Minister of India, reply comes in awe.

History, sadly, is narrated to score the political goals. And there are no apparent benefits for the political parties to remember the personalities like Maulana Azad because his life doesn’t serve anyone’s political agenda. Maulana Azad lived a life of stalwart. A devout Muslim, scholar of Islam, a fearless journalist and a freedom fighter, Azad too spent many years of his life behind bars. When in confinements he wrote about politics, spirituality and society. When free he infused patriotism into the hearts of Indians through his thoughtful speeches. As a tea lover he enjoyed even the last drop of tea stored in Finjaan – a well-crafted kettle. His Urdu was eloquent with a beautiful blend of Persian – Urdu is more beautiful when Persian is added to its vocabulary. When he spoke, the waters of Ganges and Minarates of Jama Masjid held witness.

The life of Azad cannot be limited to any one sphere of life. For the students of Quran, he is one of the great commentators of the Book. For the students of Urdu literature, his book Ghubar-e- Khatir is an ultimate read. For the students of journalism, he serves lessons in the form of his two newspapers Al-Hilal and Al-Balagh, both were banned by the Britishers. For the students of Education, his work as the first Education Minister of independent India is a priceless  lesson. Azad will continue to be remembered for years to come.
