A press statement from AMU Students’ Union on Friday has demanded the resignation of U.P CM Yogi Adityanath after 20 people have been killed and over 6000 including many students jailed for protesting against the CAA. The Union has called the police invasion into the campus “state aggression” and state excesses upon peaceful protesting students “acts of state terror”.
The Students’ Union (2018-19) strongly condemns the registration of multiple FIRs against students of AMU on farcical charges. Aligarh Muslim University Students’ Union (2018-19) also takes strong objection to slapping of GONDA act against Huzaifa Amir, secretary of the students’ union (2018-19), Hamza Sufiyan, vice president of the students union (2018-19), Nadeem Ansari, Mohammad Aamir, and Sarjil Usmani. Law is being abused to enforce silence on AMU fraternity. It is a part of instilling fear in the hearts and minds of youth and will not be acceptable to AMU students. The charges against all AMU students and our former colleagues must be revoked immediately.
Three advocates, Fazal Abdali, Mohd. Aman Khan and Maha Prasad have filed a petition in the Allahabad High Court seeking registration of FIRs against the UP Police and Para-military forces and demanding the constitution of a SIT comprising of officers not below the rank of DGP to conduct investigation and prepare commission report. Meanwhile, Union President, Mr. Salman Imtiyaz has also petitioned in the Allahabad High Court challenging the forceful entry of police into the University campus, unleashing of the violence on innocent and unarmed students, illegal detention of students, damage to library, reading rooms, vehicles, ambulances and other University buildings and firing of tear gas shells, stun grenades, chilli-based explosives, rubber bullets etc. onto the students.
The current VC Tariq Mansoor has been questioned for his incapacity to handle the situation prevailing in the University. This was a gross administrative failure and misuse of authority that AMU students were made the fodder to police force, says the statement.
