India has been reporting the sharpest spike in the positive cases of COVID-19 in the recent days. Every day, it has been registering a new record in the spike of positive cases and the number of deaths due to the virus. Since 4 June, 10 thousand cases have been reported every day. Since 19 June, the country has been reporting 15 thousand cases every day.

India is in the list of top five countries like US and Russia which recorded the highest number of cases in the world. Till 25 July, it has reported more 4,00,075 Covid cases. Top ten states, which have been reporting the highest number of cases in India are Maharashtra, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh. Maharashtra has recorded the highest number of cases around 1.50 lakh in which 6,739 patients have died. Delhi comes at the second position, reporting more than 70 thousand cases and more than 2,000 deaths. The total number of deaths in India is around 15 thousand.

These are some statistics about the victims of Covid-19 which point to the gravity of the situation in the country. The statistics also show that this worsening situation will further get worse in the coming days. According to the experts, half of Indian population may get infected with the Covid-19.

It is yet to see how this worsening situation will unfold in the coming days. But, the country has reached at this point because of Modi’s government’s half-baked polices and its insincere and unscrupulous approaches towards the pandemic. From the beginning, it has been making moves to deal with the pandemic in such a way that it only wants to project its successful image instead of taking well-thought and comprehensive measures.

One of the biggest failures of the government was the lockdown which failed in achieving its objectives. In the hasty and unplanned manner, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi imposed the lockdown in the country which eventually failed to achieve its objectives. Hence, it seems the lockdown did not make big impact on containing the virus. Instead, it has destroyed the economy.

As Industrialist Rajiv Bajaj rightly told Rahul Gandhi that the lockdown will flatten the economy curve rather than the curve of virus. During the lockdown, the covid cases have risen significantly. India is the only country where the lockdown has been eased at a time when the covid cases are sharply increasing. This has happened only because the government did not take into account all factors while enforcing the lockdown. The government could not properly calculate how it should enforce lockdown and at what time it should be done. The government’s miscalculation and shortsightedness led to the complete failure of the lockdown.

The second big issue which has been nagging the country is the lack of testing. From the very beginning, the government has been doing less tests. This was the prime reason that people could not know the real status of spreading infection in the country. In order to save its skin, the government is still doing less tests. The lesser the tests are done, the less we will know the status of infection. As we are seeing this now that how the situation is exploding as more than 15 thousand cases are being reported every day. This will continue to happen unless we test at a rapid scale and reach the every patient before he or she transpires to others.

One of the big issues is related to the healthcare system of India. As the covid cases are sharply rising, the heath cares system is not able to bear the burden. The issue of overflowing patients has been reported from Maharashtra, Gujarat and Delhi. Delhi, which is believed to have well-developed health care system in India, recently fell short of spaces in the hospitals. The hospitals are not ready to admit Covid patients as it is running out of spaces. This is the situation of most developed states. One does not know what will happen in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh if the cases rise in these states. The government needs to take steps before it gets worst and people suffer.
