Showcause Notice To 5 Jamia Students For Protesting Against Israeli Participation In The Campus Conference

Five students of Jamia Millia Islamia have been given showcause notice after they held a peaceful protest against Israeli participation in a university conference titled  Global Health Zenith Confluence 2019 on Medical Infrastructure Planning organised by the Faculty of Architecture and Ekistics, held on October 5 and 6 at Dr Ansari Auditorium.

On October 5, outside the auditorium, the students staged a protest demonstration against the participation of an Israel delegate in the Conference. Two of them were cornered by the proctorial staff, and then later locked inside the office of the proctor.  The students have alleged of manhandling by the security gaurds, and offensive language. Speaking to The Companion, one of the five students said that even the female students were manhandled, and derogatory language was hurled upon them.

Abudarta Khan, a student of BA Programme, who is one among the five students given showcause notice, speaking to The Companion said that a threat was being given to his family that he would be picked up from home. “Your son is trying to make a riot in the campus”, said the proctor to my father over phone.

Students held the peaceful protest because Israel is continuously committing grave violations of human rights upon the Palestinians, and such participation should not encouraged in Jamia.

To protest against the showcause notice, students have staged a sit-in protest, which started on 14th October and continues till date. The students’ demand is that the showcause notice be withdrawn against the five students.
