Say No To Jingoistic Nationalism, Stand With The People of Kashmir

States exist through mutual contracts, while nation exists with the consensus of shared cultures/resources. It is through such contracts and negotiations, be it social or political, that democracy achieves its equity. Any move from the ruling forces that negate these principles are evidently antithetical to the functioning of democracy.

By autocratically scrapping article 370 and 35A, the government has unilaterally put an end to the contract, which was enshrined in the Indian constitution. Without any deliberation, conversation, and consensus, the jingoistic nationalism creates a spectacle out of the new amendment. Indian constitution guarantees the federal structure and minimizes the authoritarian role of the center in the day to day affairs of states. However, what we can see in the Modi regime 2.0 is the rampant authoritarianism and arrogant display of majoritarianism, by atrociously crushing down such a spirit of the constitution.

It is a constitutional mandate that any decision on Kashmir will be taken with due consultation and consensus of Kashmir legislative assembly. Overriding all those constitutional bindings, Modi-Amit duo with their whimsical majoritarian aggression gives a clear sign to frame India into a “Savarkar’s Model Republic”, the ‘Akhand Bharat’ project of SanghParivar, where the plight of minorities will be doomed. The proposal to divide Jammu and Kashmir, making it a union territory and the scrapping of 35A is designed to humiliate an already subjugated population.

One could easily comprehend that the recent ban on Jamate Islami of Jammu and Kashmir, arrests of its leaders, and the seizure of hundreds of schools run by Falah-e-Aam trust was a beginning that eventually lead to the new amendment. It needs to be pointed out that the so called ‘liberal Indian psyche’ failed to take cues from these developments as a hint to the larger plans of the Hindutva government towards bulldozing all the voices of dissent from the valley. The silence was in spite of the concerns raised by the prominent figures across the Kashmiri political spectrum, including Mehbooba Mufti, Yousuf Tharigami and Omar Abdullah.
When we take into consideration the recent bills that are passed with fatal urgency in the parliament, it is crystal clear that the target of fascists is primarily Muslims. In the name of NRC, UAPA, Triple Talaq, and NIA bills, the suspicion is registered on the Muslim bodies. Docile Muslim bodies are perceived as potential threats to the Indian nationalism. What we see is not national integration, but national indignation. Just like the Muslim bodies becoming the ‘lynchable other’, a Muslim dominated region also cannot be trusted to be a ‘state’ in their eyes. When nationalism is molded in Brahmanical supremacy, what else we can expect?

More threatening is the complete absence of humanity from the side of propagators of this bill, where their social media accounts are calling for a mass genocide over Kashmiri Muslims and spreading the pictures of land to be bought and the women to be married/raped in the valley. This masculine nationalism and patriotic jingoism are sickening and disturbing, though it is not new.

Thousands of troops have been deployed on the streets, tourists and pilgrims are ordered to return, schools and colleges are shut down, opposition leaders have been put under house arrest with a midnight knock on their doors, the internet has been blacked out, phone lines have been severed, air force continue to raid the civil areas, media have been blocked, thus being unable to pass the news outside. Even as the announcement was made, Kashmiris were kept in dark because of a total communication clampdown and that continues till today.

In this war like situation, where the fascist state has chosen to subjugate its own citizens, we appeal to the entire HCU fraternity to stand in solidarity with the people of Kashmir. Let’s embrace our Kashmiri brothers and sisters in these times of peril, and stand in solidarity to their rights and aspirations. These hard times too shall pass. Justice, freedom and truth will prevail in the valley… Insha Allah
