With a rapid increase in population, the demand of resources is also increasing subsequently. It’s high time we need to recognize the importance and advantages of renewable sources of energy, because with the increase of time, population and demand, non-renewable resources are going to be extinguished. The major forms of renewable resources are – sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves and geothermal. Among these the most favorable form of energy for the human and the environment is sunlight.
The energy produced from the sunlight is commonly known as solar energy. Solar energy is dominant over other forms of energy in several ways. The most important factor is its being eco-friendly in nature. Unlike others, it doesn’t cause any harm to nature and the surrounding environment. It’s just a one time investment and thereafter, it doesn’t need any maintenance cost with respect to others. The only disadvantage of solar energy is its efficiency which is nearly about 17-25 %.Sunlight received by earth in one hour is enough to meet the annual energy needs of all people worldwide according to National Renewable Energy Laboratory. In 2015 solar energy was the fastest growing energy sector with a 33% rise according to Bloomberg. The environmental advantages are the main drivers in promoting solar energy.
Taking all these factors in consideration, students of Institute of Technical Education and Research, SOA university is carrying out a project to increase the efficiency of Solar energy. They are working basically on four fields :-
- Solar PV connection scheme.
- Hybrid system- connecting two or more types of energy sources for more efficiency.
- Increasing the efficiency of Inverter.
- Harmonics Estimation- control the fluctuation of AC current.
It had set up both the On grid system and the Off grid system. The On grid system will produce 3.5 Kw of energy which will be mainly used for households. The Off grid System will produce 11.2 Kw of energy which can be used for commercial purposes. It is also aiming to provide electricity to the surrounding villages by in the form of solar energy.
Global Warming is currently the most concerned issue of the entire World. The “electric power sector accounted for 32% of U.S. total greenhouse gas emissions in 2012,” according to the Environmental Protection Energy(EPA). The emissions lead to a rise in global temperatures, and changes in weather patterns leading to cascading effects. Higher carbon dioxide concentration is making oceans acidic and killing marine life, like corals. Irregular rainfall or increasing droughts affects agriculture and livelihoods of the weaker sections of society globally.Solar power can restrict climate change as it produces no carbon emission.
Another key aspect of using solar energy is that it has massive financial benefits. They can generally be seen in the reduction of your utility bills. Moreover, it is also increases the employment opportunity for the young generation of the country. A 2016 government report of America states that employment in the solar sector increased by 123% in five years since 2010. By 2015 there were 209,000 people employed in solar jobs. The number of people working in solar is higher than the number working for oil and gas plants. In fact 1.2% of all jobs in the U.S. were from the solar industry. In 2015, 1 million people were employed in solar PV sector.
On the global front, the use of solar energy seems to be one of the best options available. The change in the climate world over is a serious threat to our planet which is causing much of the problems. The emission levels of carbon dioxide that we generate by the constant use of fossil fuel are literally killing our planet. The usage of solar energy will only provide us with a clean environment, a life where we will not have to constantly worry about the ever so reducing resources to provide us with basic comforts of our life. The importance of solar energy is sure to play a big role in saving the environment, helping people socially and economically, and creating jobs and research.
