The AMU provost assured that within two weeks alternative power will be supplied to the demanded areas of Abdullah Hall.

The Aligarh Muslim University’s (AMU) Women’s College Student Union (WCSU) on 24th March met with the provost of Abdullah Hall, Prof. Zeba Sheereen, to request her to provide the hall with backup electricity facility.

The WCSU secretary, Fabeha Ahmed along with Vice-President, Nida Akram, and two cabinet members Khan Ayela Ishrat Ali and Sibtey Sughra had a brief meeting with Prof. Zeba, who is also an Economics professor at Women’s College, AMU, asking her to put to use the gensets (generators) that the hall already owns and connect it with the essential places like reading rooms, dining halls, common rooms and wash rooms of the various hostels in the hall and the auditorium of the college. They also requested the provost to bring about an enhancement in the other day-to-day essentialities of the students like “proper maintenance of existing water facilities by changing all the filter tanks” and “improvement in food facilities”. Prof. Sheereen assured that she would soon have the gensets connected to the specified sections of the hall and within two weeks those areas will be supplied with much needed alternative power.

T.W hostel, Abdullah Hall

Abdullah Hall has about eight hostels which house around 2,250 female students of the university coming from various states of the country. All the bachelor students belonging to the faculties of arts, commerce and science except for the bachelors of foreign languages stay in this hall along with the school girls from standard nine to twelve. These students face a lot of difficulties when the light goes out as there is barely any alternative power facility to support them with. Providing this essential facility- electricity- should be on the provisions of the AMU.

The secretary of WCSU said that the union is planning on to try to approach the provost or the higher university authorities to request them to get the hall more generators so that the whole Abdullah Hall could be run on backup electricity power during a power cut.

“We as college students have a fixed routine. So, when there is a power cut then the whole routine gets disrupted and it causes us a lot of trouble.” A second-year commerce student of Abdullah Hall said.

“If the university is providing the students with hostels then it should also ensure that it provides uninterrupted electricity supply to the students during the nighttime. Because at the end of the day we are over here to study and it hampers the education.” Shazi Alam, a first-year English Hons. student of the hall said.

  1. The provost is a professor of economics department NOT zoology. And the washrooms and dining halls do have generator connections. The meeting which is being talked about in this article was nothing but the writing of an application which according to the provost has been forwarded to the higher authorities. But there’s no follow up of the same. And there are many other important issues the union members had mentioned in their respective manifestos like proper health facilities in the hall, making books available in the hall’s library, namaz room for NR students and taking action to make sure there are no stray dogs in the hall which is a serious safety issue for us.

    • Sumbul, I have talked to the secretary of WCSU before writing down this article. She very clearly said that she and the other members of the WCSU had a meeting with the provost where they talked over quite a few things. Okay? And for the part of there being a generator connection in the washroom and the dining. In our hostel, there is a complete blackout during a power cut. The hostel does not even have a connection with an inverter leave out a generator. Maybe for you this is not a big issue but for many of us this is a major issue.I don’t in which part of Abdullah Hall you reside in that you’re so unaware of this thing. And for the book issues, WCSU has brought some competitive books in the library. And as a kind reminder, I have never mentioned that I have played any role in writing down their manifestos. And for the issue of health facilities, a letter has been signed by the provost to give sanction to it. Apparently, it seems that you do not know that these official work take time. It is not like you say it today and tomorrow it will be done. From now on before writing down anything you don’t know much about at least make some effort to know about it and then fill your words in the comment section. It sends a really bad message about you.

She said that she and the other members of the WCSU had a meeting with the provost where they had some confidential talk. As you don’t know but in my hostel during a power cut there is a complete blackout. We do not even have a connection with an inverter leave out the generator. Apparently, this isn’t an issue for you but for us this is a major issue. And competitive books have been brought in the library for the students. The secretary had also written a letter to the provost on the improvement in the health facilities and it has been sanctioned. We are talking about official work over here. It takes time. It’s not like you say it today and tomorrow it will be done. Please from now on first try to know what you’re talking about. It’s very discouraging.

  4. Sumbul, before writing this article I had a talk with the secretary of the WCSU and she told me that the provost and she along with the other WCSU members had a talk over quite a few things. Apparently, as you don’t know but there is a complete blackout in our hostel during a power cut. We do not have an inverter connection leave out the generator. Maybe this is not a big issue for you but for us it is. And if you read the article properly then I have clearly written that the provost asked for two weeks time for executing the request. If you don’t know but competitive books had been brought in the library and a letter has been recently sanctioned by the provost on improvising the health facilities. These are official works we are talking about. It takes time. It’s not like you say it today and tomorrow it will be done. From now on before writing down you don’t know much about first try to gather information on it and then fill the comment section. It is very discourgaing.

  5. And Miss Erum, I talked to the senior cabinet member of the WCSU after reading this article. Well let’s just wait for the two weeks time the provost has requested for. I apologize for I didn’t know your condition but Alhamdulillah I don’t face such a problem in my hostel which is in Abdullah hall itself. And let’s wait for the improvisation of health facilities in our hall. And yes since the past two years we are being told that the ambassador car which is used to take girls to the health center or JNMC will soon be replaced by a better ambulance. I wonder why the union could not do anything about it because it was not yesterday that they were elected to power. As far as I remember it has been quite a few months since we went for voting.

    • I don’t get it what’s your problem? Look, Sumbul it’s just three members of the union went to the provost and the senior cabinet was not one of them. So, please for the love of god stop badgering me with your comments. Neither am I the provost nor the cabinet members. I am an aspiring journalist who has covered an issue that the union is trying to solve. If it does not get implemented then go and talk to the provost or to anyone you want to. I have nothing to do with it. Instead of trying to slow down other people’s progress, go and improve yourself to get better that’s way more productive because let’s face it I don’t have time to reply your comments which have little sense. As I have pointed out you barely know of half the matter. And because your hostel has a backup connection does not mean that Abdullah Hall has no backup problem. If it would have been such a case then the WCSU had not gone to the provost with plea but they went and provost sanctioned it. So that means Abdullah Hall does has a backup problem.

  6. I can’t understand what’s your problem? Why are you badgering me with your comments? Look Sumbul, I don’t want to get any further comments from you because they don’t have much sense. I am not a member of the union that you are typing down these comments on my article. First of all, as the SECRETARY has told me the SENIOR CABINET was NOT among the 4 WCSU members who went to the provost. Second, I am glad to know that your hostel doesn’t face this problem but that doesn’t mean that this problem doesn’t persist in Abdullah Hall. If it would have been so then neither the WCSU had gone to the provost with such a plea nor the provost would have sanctioned it. But the provost knows that there is a backup problem therefore she had sanctioned it. Third, if the health facilities do not improve then there is nothing I can do on it and nowhere in the article I have said that I take the full responsibility of the demands to get fulfilled. Now, kindly get yourself some productive work and get over this topic because let’s face it I don’t have much time to sit and reply to your comments. I have an internship for writing articles not for replying to your comments.

  7. First of all, I found some errors in your article and just corrected them. And I did apologize where I was wrong. The comment about inefficiency of the union was not directed towards you. It is the union’s failure not yours. You failed when you started throwing aggressive remarks on me. If I find that the union is not working I will raise questions be it to the union members or their dear friends or supporters. It is my right. And let’s suppose that I have half the knowledge of the matter. What were you supposed to do as a journalist who had the entire information? Lastly, I’ve got nothing to do with you or your progress. Girl, I don’t even know you. Just go back and read my first comment and your first comment. Did I humiliate you or was it vice versa?

  8. Okay, I get it. I apologize if you felt slighted by my words. But neither am I their near friend nor these comments are going reach them. I just happened to talk to them about this matter like you happened to talk to the senior cabinet. So, let’s give a conclusion to this. And I am thankful to you for pointing out my errors.
