BrailleBoard is an Android application that helps visually impaired people to type on touch screens using Braille languages.
BrailleBoard is an application that supports writing on touch screens using Braille language, developed for the visually impaired people who are using smart phones. The user doesn’t have to learn new typing technique since they already know the Braille language. The main advantage of the this app is that it does not need any extra equipment to be connected to the smart phone and this makes BrailleBoard less expensive than any other solution. Users can enter the six standard inputs (initial points) after which they don’t have to stick to these points in any later entries. It is also simple to use, one entry for each character, supported by voice and it responds promptly to the input.
Till now BrailleBoard is implemented for Android devices, and it will be available for iOS in the near future.
Our motivation is to make the life of visually impaired more easier, to make all members of the community able to deal with new technology and to support the empowerment and inclusion of visually impaired in the society.
It’s very hard for visually impaired person to type on a smartphone using usual soft keyboard and every day, every hour, every minute, and every second they face problems when using smartphones to type text.
What if any one of us could lose his/her sight? Can we imagine how we could deal with smartphones if we have no sight?
We wanted to provide a helping hand and wanted to leave the imprint in the community. Our future plan is to make versions of BrailleBoard in iOS and other smartphones OS. Also we want it to support languages other than Arabic and English.
BrailleBoard is a Palestinian startup group in Gaza comprising of four girls (Esraa El-Ashqer, Ghadeer Abu Shaban, Ayat Abu-Noqaira, Nour El-Wadiya)
BrailleBoard was chosen as one of the winners in the World Summit Awards for mobile contents in 2014.
