Every Indian is proud of democratic constitution which is based on values like secularism, equality, justice, plurality and harmony. For the construction of a civilized India these values are essential for the nation. For some time, these constitutional and democratic values have been at the helm of attacks and undermining.
Looking at the present situation of our beloved country where fascism, communalism, violence and injustice are spreading, Yuva Saathi Gujarati Monthly (Organ of SIO Gujarat) organized a panel discussion on ‘Democracy: Challenges and Opportunities.
Panel members include Prof. Rohit Shukl (Editor, Abhidrashti), Abdul latif Sheth (Secretary, JIH Gujarat), Shamsuddin Pirzada (Retired Judge) and Dr. Mehrunnisha Desai (President AMWA).
Discussion started with inaugural words of Abid Khan (President, SIO Gujarat). He reminded that during independence, M.K. Gandhi emphasized and agreed on equal development, opportunities and security to all sections of the society. But after 70 years of independence, situation is totally different. We have been seeing injustice with Rohit Vemula and Najeeb, and many other incidents who are raising question mark on their thoughts and dreams.
Prof. Rohit Shukl expressed his views and said that in recent days democratic values are losing their importance. He quoted examples of England, America, Turkey and France. He further said that media has been sold in the hands of capitalistic communalists and justice is in endangered position. Many secular authors like Dabholkar, Kalburgi etc. have been killed by enemies of democracy. Finally he concluded that it is clear that government is run by capitalists.
Jb. Abdul Latif Sheth said that in whole of the country in the name of cow notorious people are trying to spoil peaceful environment. It is government’s responsibility to maintain law and order situation in the country. He suggested that a system must be there for accountability of public representative.
Jb. Shamsuddin Pirzada said that courts should not interfere in personal matters of societies. Courts are delivering their views on triple talaaq which is not healthy for the judicial system. Dr. Mehrunnisha Desai expressed her view on polygamy and other issues of women. Dr. Saquib Malik successfully conducted the discussion. Program ended with a vote of thanks of Br. Umar Mansuri.
