Introduction:
In a world faced with pressing environmental challenges, future leaders and change-makers hold the key to creating a sustainable future. On the occasion of World Environment Day, let us delve into the timeless wisdom of the Quran and explore how it can inspire and guide us in our mission to protect and preserve our planet. This article serves as a rallying call to action, presenting a roadmap that empowers youth to embrace environmental stewardship, rooted in Quranic teachings.

  1. Understanding the Quranic Perspective on Environmental Responsibility:
The Quran, as the divine revelation, offers profound insights into the interconnectedness of all creation and guides our role as custodians of the Earth. By understanding these Quranic principles, we can develop a deep sense of reverence for nature and recognize our duty to safeguard it.

1.1) Verse 6:141“And He it is who causes gardens to grow, [both] trellised and untrellised, and palm trees and crops of different [kinds of] food and olives and pomegranates, similar and dissimilar. Eat of [each of] its fruit when it yields and give its due [zakat] on the day of its harvest. And be not excessive. Indeed, He does not like those who commit excess.”
This verse highlights the importance of moderation and balance in our interactions with the environment. It encourages us to appreciate the diverse blessings provided by Allah while being mindful of our consumption patterns and avoiding excess.

1.2) Verse 6:165 – “And it is He who has made you successors (khalifa) upon the Earth and has raised some of you above others in degrees [of rank] that He may try you through what He has given you.”
This verse establishes the concept of Khilafa, highlighting our role as trustees and successors on Earth. It reminds us that our actions have consequences and that we will be held accountable for how we fulfil this responsibility

1.3) Verse 55:7-9“And the heaven, He raised it high, and He has set up the Balance, so that you may not transgress the balance.”
These verses emphasize the importance of balance and moderation in all aspects of life, including our interactions with the environment. They encourage us to find equilibrium and avoid overconsumption or wasteful practices.

1.4) Verse 30:41“Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned so He may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [to righteousness].”
This verse serves as a reminder of the consequences of human actions on the environment. It emphasizes the need to reflect on our behaviour and rectify any harm caused, recognizing that our actions have a direct impact on the balance and well-being of the Earth.

1.5) Verse 2:29“It is He who created for you all of that which is on the Earth. Then He directed Himself to the heaven, [His being above all creation], and made them seven heavens, and He is Knowing of all things.”
This verse highlights the immense beauty and diversity of the Earth’s creation, emphasizing that it has been bestowed upon us as a trust from Allah. It encourages us to cherish and protect the natural world, recognizing the interconnectedness of all living beings.

1.6) Verse 55:10 – “And the Earth He laid [out] for the creatures.”
This concise verse reminds us of the Earth’s purpose as a dwelling place for all living creatures. It emphasizes the need to safeguard the environment, ensuring that it remains a hospitable and thriving habitat for every species.
